What Is a Dermatologist?
Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialise in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. In Australia, fully qualified dermatologists are recognised by the title FACD — Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists — which represents the highest standard of dermatology training and expertise in the country.
How Dermatologists Are Trained
Becoming a dermatologist in Australia involves extensive, highly competitive training. After completing medical school and hospital residency, doctors must be accepted into a four-year specialist dermatology training program, which includes ongoing supervision, structured assessments, and final fellowship examinations. Only those who meet the College’s rigorous standards are awarded fellowship status.
What Dermatologists Do
Dermatologists manage a wide range of conditions from common skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea to complex diseases such as autoimmune skin disorders, rare rashes, and advanced skin cancers. They care for patients of all ages, and often work alongside other specialists to support patients with skin conditions linked to broader health concerns.
In Australia, where skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world — dermatologists play a critical role in early detection and treatment. Most are highly skilled in performing skin checks, biopsies, and surgical procedures, including flap and graft closures when required.
Dermatologists are also trained to interpret pathology reports in context — ensuring diagnostic accuracy and guiding safe, effective treatment. Occasionally, this may mean repeating a biopsy if results are unclear or inconsistent with the clinical picture.
Many dermatologists also have expertise in cosmetic and laser treatments, combining medical knowledge with an aesthetic approach to address concerns like pigmentation, scarring, volume loss, and signs of ageing.
